Columbus

Earlier this week I had the opportunity to attend a conference in Columbus, Ohio. I was overall impressed with the city. As a city with over 730,000 residents, it is the biggest city in Ohio and the 15th largest city in the U.S. I spent most of my time in downtown Columbus – which has a good mix of new and old buildings, many of which are clustered around the Ohio state capitol and High Street. Going north on High Street from downtown leads to The Ohio State University, while going south leads to the German Village district – a quaint part of town with red brick roads, shops and houses. The town was fun but not frightening – a good dose of urbanism without the hassles of big city life. I would recommend an afternoon visit if driving through Ohio. I was, however, left with a puzzle: if Columbus is the biggest city in Ohio, why are the two NFL teams based on other Ohio cities (Cleveland and Cincinnati)? This seems like a great injustice. I think Columbus should lobby the NFL for their own team – it could be called the Columbus Columbos. That’d be fearsome.

I’ve been looking forward to the results of this study for quite sometime. Driving to Iowa City every day from my home in CR, I often wish for a speedy (or even not speedy) mass transit alternative. I would much rather spend an hour reading on a train than 40 minutes driving my car. Read the rest of this entry »
